Totally awesome vacation: Nova Scotia! Day 5

By the time we got to Halifax, we were all just exhausted. We did have the added benefit of staying in hotels that all had pools, so we did a lot of swimming, which we love - but not when there are other people anywhere around. We meet some real weirdos in the pools...like the guy who very well could have been the real life incarnate of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. ANYWAY....

It is weird to be in Canada. It's like America Light. It's kinda the same thing, but there's just something a little off about it. And I'm not even talking about the written French everywhere or the metric system (who the hell decided we should go English system??) It's mostly the food - Canadian food, my heavens, the food! My overwhelming thought about that is: Canadian cusine - Someone has got to do something about that. Partuclarly the potato chips - those are the things that are the MOST mind-boggling. Brown gravy (they sure do love gravy), "all-dressed" (tomato, vinegar and onion flavor), pickle, and chicken flavored chips are just some of the things that throw you off. Plus, we went to a restaurant that ran out of hamburgers. How do you run out of hamburgers?? That would never happen in the good ol' US of A. We just wouldn't stand for it.

To be honest, there isn't a ton of stuff to do in Halifax. We had already seen the coolest fort Nova Scotia had to offer, so the idea of going to their Citadel a few blocks from the hotel was a little underwhelming. While we were eating our nasty, nasty food at Ft. Louisbourg yesterday, we chatted with some very nice people from N.C. who were essentially doing the trip we were doing, but in reverse, so they were in Halifax the day before. They highly recommended visiting a place called Peggy's Cove about 30 minutes West of Halifax. So that's where we headed this morning.

It turned out to be my FAVORITE part of the whole trip! Peggy's Cove is essentially a tiny tiny little fishing village surrounding a tourist restaurant and a lighthouse. But it's totally awesome! If there is one thing that Little Truckers LOVE on their trips, it's diners. That's how we became LTs to begin with. So breakfast at this restaurant was delicious! But Canada does have some weird sausage. How can they get bacon and ham right, but mess up sausage?

The lighthouse is situated on some these gigantic glacial deposit rocks that are HUGE and you can run all over like you were 8 again - like an explorer. We ran over them like we were on a playground and took tons of pictures. It was SO SO cold and windy, but we had a total blast, with the exception of maybe Tristy who was wearing her standard ballet flats. :))

We headed over to the Titanic gravesite. 700 of the survivors were taken to NY, while ships based out of Halifax brought over 200 bodies back to Nova Scotia. Most were buried at sea. It was facinating to stop at this little cemetary (also a LT must during our trips) to see headstones. The Titanic disaster has become such a huge part of our folklore and pop culture that for the first time, it became very real to me. Also buried in this cemtary were victims of the 1917 Halifax explosion. Fascinating!

We then went back to the hotel so we could round out our Halifax adventure with playhing the slots (ok, not entirely my favorite, but still fun.) We walked through a series of under/above ground tunnels and skywalks to get to the casino. It had become a running joke throughout the trip about gambling because Tristy had won big on both of the boats taking us to/from PEI. She had won some $30 odd dollars out of a few quarters, so we figured we'd press our luck on the last night with our remaining Canadian change. 20 minutes later, I was out $30 (gambling is NOT something I should be addicted to), Hayley and Courtney were busted and Tristy won like another $50. It was riducluous how she kept winning!

Back at the hotel, we packed and got ready to part the next morning. Sad that another Little Trucker Annual trip to Somewhere was coming to a close. However, in keeping with all the rules, regualtions and traditions, we DID decide where we are heading next year and we're really looking forward to it already! We just need to decide on the book to read for the trip!
